In 1897 the Anglican missionary Isaac Stringer moved onto Herschel Island with his wife Sadie. This photo was taken the following year. Living conditions were primitive. The Stringers lived in a sod house with a stove made of tin cans. Mrs. Stringer made curtains for the windows out of her wedding dress. The couple are wearing Inuit clothing sealskin boots and parkas made of caribou hide. Stringer became known as the "Bishop who ate his boots" because once he was lost in the northern wilderness and survived by chewing on his leather moccasins.
