Wherever the whaling men wintered, their presence attracted the local Inuit who came to trade and to assist the visitors with food and labour. These women, in their brightly decorated clothing, belonged to the Aivilingmiut tribe. They lived near Fullerton Harbour, where this photo was taken in 1904 during the Neptune's visit. Note the tattooing on their faces. This is a posed portrait with a sheet or a canvas sail for a backdrop.
