Infectious diseases such as small pox and diptheria continued to strike heavily at working class families. Dispensaries or "well baby clinics" such as this one were vital in the war against infant deaths. However, as late as 1927, no systematic public health programme existed in Montreal to serve the needs of suffering adults. Medical attention was only for those who could afford a private doctor.
