The extent of the pre-Confederation city is revealed in this 1866 engraving showing the East and the West Sides of the city and the Town of Portland which begins on the far side of the Reversing Falls Bridge. Saint John was the largest urban centre in the Atlantic colonies at this time and its future seemed to be promising. The focus of its life, as had been the case since 1785, was its magnificent harbour.
