This photograph by the well-known MontrΘal photographer, Charles Notman, shows King Street looking towards the harbour. This street was the busy urban centre of a growing city. As such it posed all the problems and offered most of the delights that urbanization brought: colour, filth, excitement, danger of fire and bustle. Note the variety of building designs and construction materials.
