Much different than the cook's wagon which accompanied cowboys at round-up time, these modified chuck-wagons are competing in one of the most popular attractions at the annual Calgary Stampede. The first team to load its gear in the chuck-wagon, manoeuvre the vehicle around two fixed barrels in order to negotiate a fire eight pattern, and then complete the half-mile race circuit, is the winner of this uniquely Canadian contribution to rodeo entertainment.
In the Stampede one can observe a very important and sustaining link between the old and the new Calgary. In common with many other communities, Calgary hosts an annual fair and exhibition and the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede has gained an international reputation. But it seems clear that at the local and regional level this annual summer rodeo has a special significance. With the exception of war-time interruptions, the Calgary Stampede has been held almost every year since 1912 and is one of the factors contributing to that quality which distinguishes Calgary from other western cities. The Stampede is a manifestation of the city's particular past and each year it permits the bond with the earlier period to be enthusiastically renewed. To this extent, the Stampede has played a critical role in sustaining an identity constructed during the founding period.
