Bordering the city on the southwest is a major Indian reservation that is the home of the Sarcee (Sarsi) Indians. In large part this proximity accounts for the fact that Indians have remained a common sight on Calgary streets. For Foxtail, the Sarcee wagon driver in this photograph, there was little prospect of his family gaining much advantage from the city's growth and development or from the new technology that was enriching the lives of Calgary's new white residents (such as the Beale family in illustration 14). While some Indians went door-to-door seeking handouts or endeavouring to sell handicrafts, others like Foxtail dug up small trees on the reserve to sell to Calgary homeowners.
