The initial step in pitching a tipi is the erection of the four foundation poles. The remaining poles rest against these in a precise manner which ensures a small smoke hole at the top of the structure. In this photograph you can see the last pole being added with the tipi cover tied to it. Once this pole is in place one end of the cover will be "walked around" the tipi, thus stretching the cover over the structure. The two ends of the cover are tied together at the front of the tipi.
