As traditional Blackfoot culture changed, native artists responded to the changed reality. New subject matter and media were added to the artists' repertoire. Traditional scenes as well as cowboy life were the subject of Gerald Tailfeathers' (1925-1975) paintings and bronzes. While still a young man, Tailfeathers received formal art training in both Canada and the United States. Winold Reiss (illustration 11) was one of his early teachers. This Blood Indian artist played an important role in the founding of the national Indian Arts and Crafts Committee in which he was active until his death.
