With the introduction of the horse into Blackfoot culture the buffalo drive replaced the earlier hunting method of forcing the buffalo over a cliff. The early rifles, however, did not replace the more efficient and traditional bow and arrow for hunting. This oil painting by one of the major American painters of the West, Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926) captures the tremendous excitement of a buffalo hunt and illustrates the skilled manner in which the hunters manoeuvred their horses in order to assure a successful kill.
