This mid-fourteenth-century village on the Lake Huron shoreline contained twelve longhouses, eleven surrounded by a double stockade and one outside. One of the houses within the defences had been torn down, and two others had been built over it. At this site, archaeologists used a bulldozer to push away the top layer of soil which had been disturbed by the farmer's plough. By careful recording techniques the archaeologists were able to record the plan of the village. This photograph clearly illustrates the variety of soil colouring which assists in the identification of such characteristic features as post molds and hearths.
