The tactics of la petite guerre were abandoned when the struggle between Canadian militia, American provincials, and their respective Amerindian allies became a war of empire fought by seamen and regular soldiers. Traditional European tactics were employed in such engagements as Louisbourg (1758) and QuÄbec (1759). At Louisbourg a full-scale siege was conducted with the cumbersome and time-consuming formalities of entrenching. The scale and nature of the imperial war left little or no place for the earlier strategies of petite guerre. This contemporary engraving by Captain Ince shows Louisbourg blockaded by the Royal Navy, and preparations going forward under Brigadier James Wolfe for the opening of a new British artillery position at Lighthouse Point, which dominates the fortress.
