The Canadian irregular bites the end of a prepared cartridge (left) and exposes the powder. When the supply in his cartridge box decreases, the irregular replenishes his supply by rolling paper into a short cylinder and filling it with powder and a musket ball. From the open cartridge a small amount of powder is poured into the priming pan on the lock of the musket and the frizzen is closed over the powder to prevent it from falling out.
