La petite guerre as a "veritable hunt for human game" was nowhere better illustrated than at Schenectady in New York Colony on 18 February 1690. Of this raid, the mayor of Albany reported:
The Cruelties Committed at said Place no Penn can write nor Tongue expresse; Ye women big with child ripped up and ye children alive thrown into Ye flames, and their heads dashed in pieces against the Doors and windows.
The Canadians were proving to be as ruthless as the Iroquois. This oil painting of ca.1833 by Samuel Hayden Sexton captures the horror of what has become known in the United States as the Schenectady Massacre. Note that all living things, including domesticated animals, are being slaughtered in this reconstruction of the fateful events.
