This photograph shows such a machine from its "dry" end. The scale of the machine is indicated by the winder operator, while the various control panels suggest how automatic the process has become, especially in the major Canadian product, newsprint made from softwood pulp. This is the final stage of paper manufacture, in which the finished roll is cut and wound into rolls suitable for the high-speed presses of newspapers. Such presses will turn out many thousands of copies per hour, folded ready for automatic counting and bundling and prompt delivery to newsstands and carriers.
