Presses similar to this were common in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and were often used by amateur printers. The type bed is simply a planed board, with the platen hinged at one end and an arm that could squeeze platen and bed together at the other. Probably the press James Evans made to print his Cree hymnary was something like this, made from materials available to him in Rupert's Land.
