The forme contains several lines of both metal and wood type, all spaced out to exactly the same length. The whole chase or frame is filled completely with "furniture", wood or metal blocking to hold all the type together and keep it standing evenly on its feet. At the right side of the chase you can see the "quoins" (pronounced "coins"), long wedges driven together to lock the forme solidly; these are machine quoins drawn together by a key, but early printers used simple hardwood wedges driven together with a mallet and curved bar called a "shooter" or "shooting stick".
