A young couple view Niagara Falls about 1869. The woman wears a dress trimmed with finely pleated frilling, which was the height of fashion. Her tiny hat, with narrow brim, is trimmed with a long feather and is stylishly tilted forward. She carries a large utilitarian umbrella. Parasols, in contrast, were small and only protected the face from the unwelcome rays of the sun.
The man is wearing a lounge suit. Suits with all three pieces matching were, by this time, firmly established as standard everyday wear. Notice the wide sleeve like that on the homespun dress. He carries a bowler hat which had come in style during the early 1860s and was correct wear with a lounge suit but never with the more formal frock coat. Note the low turn-down shirt collar worn with a small bow tie.
