These accessories are shown against a long, wide, silk and wool Norwich shawl of the 1840s. It resembles those in illustration 5 and remained in fashion until the middle of the century. Other accessories include a wide embroidered collar of about 1840 and a narrow one of the 1850s with matching undersleeves. The tartan velvet slippers were worn in MontrÄal in the 1840s and the embroidered black and pink ones in Canada West in the 1860s. There was no shaping for right and left foot until this period.
Wrist-length white kid gloves were worn from the 1840s to the 1860s for every occasion except with evening dress, when elbow-length ones were correct. Wrist-length, fingerless mittens of netted black or white silk or cotton were worn in summer.
The chain of Scotch agates with a large pin at each end is a shawl pin. Shawl pins held the large square shawls in place across the chest.
