"Philemon's Mill and Tavern at the ChaudiΦre c. 1823" Philemon Wright (1760-l839) (Henry du Vernet).
Philemon Wright founded the community of Hull at the ChaudiΦre Falls in 1800. To make ends meet, according to Wright, "It was time for me to look out for an export market to cover my imports." In 1806 he and four others ran a timber raft to Quebec.
At the centre is his gristmill and saw mill, behind them the storehouse. According to Hughson and Bond in Hurling Down the Pine (first edition) the three-storey storehouse was constructed in 1824. The four chimneys belonged to the smithy; the rest of the building was an inn. Henry du Vernet, a topographical artist, serving in the British army, painted this scene.
