This engraving by James Duncan (1806-1881) depicts the Montreal General Hospital, founded in 1819. In response to a shortage of hospitals and the pressing needs of British immigrants, the hospital was built on a site in the centre of the faubourg Saint-Laurent. This view shows the hospital before 1848 and gives an indication of how the city had grown. Compare this with the John Adams map of 1825 (illustration 4). It is clear from the engraving that the agricultural area was still very close to the city; a Montrealer is shown at work in his field.
