In the middle of the nineteenth century, St. James Street was already the financial heart of Canada. The porticoed entrances were typical of the architecture of financial institutions in the Victorian age. Gas lamps were used for lighting. The elegant carriages in this lithograph by John Murray are a reminder of the existence of the upper bourgeoisie.
