In the 1840s a new style of housing started to appear. Row houses, based on the terrace houses of London, were clearly aimed at the leisured classes and were built of stone or brick. The main feature of these houses was their perpendicular style: each unit was rather narrow with one or, as here, two stories. This particular terrace was completed in 1847 and located in the Saint-Laurent suburb. Before 1850, this part of the Saint-Laurent suburb was a residential area for the lower bourgeoisie. This advertisement appeared in the Montreal Herald (18 March, 1847) and offers rental units in the recently completed Tecumseth Terrace.
