This view of Notre-Dame Street is the work of an amateur English artist, John Lambert, who visited North America between 1806 and 1808. Included in his Travels through Lower Canada and the United States... (London: 1810), this work records the appearance of Notre-Dame, west of the Place d'Armes, at the beginning of the nineteenth century. At the end of the street can be seen the front of the old parish church (also visible in illustration 14). The street was still a residential area as is indicated by the people on their doorsteps greeting the priest as he passes. Buildings were still in the traditional Montreal style: the houses in the old part of the city, as in this case, were of stone; in the suburbs the style was the same but construction was of wood. The style of carriage in vogue at the time should also be noted.
