Throughout the nineteenth century, the one room school continued to prosper in rural Canada. All ages were to be found in such schools, as can be seen in this photograph from 1890 of a school in Lanark County, Ontario. The school would also serve as a focal point for the social and cultural life of a small or isolated community, with events such as spelling bees or annual picnics involving all social groups.
