Segregation by sex as well as by age and ability were among the reforms promoted by nineteenth century educators. Plans for the new larger schools almost invariably showed separate rooms for younger and older children and often had separate rooms for boys and girls as well. In this plan (Journal of Education for the Province of Quebec, volume 2, 1858, p. 92) separate rooms and entrances are provided for boys (Room F, Entrance K) and girls (Room A, Entrance D). Segregation extended beyond the classroom and some plans for playgrounds established exclusive exercise areas for boys and girls.
