In this early nineteenth-century, anonymous portrait of a family, the nuclear group of parents and children is idealized. The children are not very different from their parents. They are perceived, as was so often the case in earlier times, as essentially miniature adults. In costume, stance, and expression they are little different from the grown-ups that they would eventually become.
