This painting by Frances Hopkins of the camp of a small brigade of North canoes shows what little comfort awaited the voyageurs after the day's toil. Supper was a simple meal, most likely of the pemmican and flour stew known as "rubaboo." Bed was the rocky ground with one blanket for warmth and the over-turned canoe for shelter. At dawn, the guide roused the camp with the cry of "Levez, levez." The voyageurs would quickly break camp and paddle several hours before breakfast.
