The busiest part of the annual routine at a fur trade post was when the Indians came in to trade. During their stay they were not housed within the post walls but camped close to the fort on an open area called the "plantation". This photograph, taken at Oxford House in 1880, gives an impression of what the plantation area would have been like. Note the range of tipis and the canoes drawn up in front.
