Although the working class was scattered over the city in pockets in the eastern and western ends, the most visible working class settlement and immigrant area was in St. John's Ward. The area bounded by College, Queen, University and Yonge Streets was labelled "The Ward." This central area of Toronto exemplified all the problems of a typical slum area overcrowding, open privy pits, dark, dank housing and a host of social problems including prostitution. But "The Ward" was also a lively community with neighborhoods and an active street life.
