On hot summer nights in "The Ward" it was not unusual to see people sleeping in doorways and camping out on the sidewalk like this woman and her children. Poor ventilation and windowless rooms made the heat of muggy Toronto summers difficult to bear. This photograph, like some of the others, is notable for the absence of any adult men. Married women assumed the primary responsibility for the care of children and did not work outside the home except in extreme circumstances.
