In this kitchen of a working-class home there is running water, unlike some of the worst houses in "The Ward." Note the plaster fallen from the ceiling, but also observe the framed pictures on the wall and the coverless book on the table. These objects suggest that despite poverty, working-class families valued literacy and tried to improve their immediate surroundings. The girl in the family probably cared for her younger siblings while her parents, or parent, worked.
