Population, Industrial Establishments and Employees in Toronto, 1881-1911.
The Toronto population grew rapidly from 1881 to 1911, but especially in the decade 1881-1891 when it more than doubled. Census definitions often shift so some care is necessary in interpreting this data. The remarkable decline in number of industrial establishments between 1891 and 1901, for example, is largely a statistical artifact. In 1901 a new definition of "establishment" was used. Only those companies employing five or more were counted that year.
