This block-long children's shelter was, as the lamp before it proclaimed, open all night to receive youngsters without a place to sleep. The sign on the tall building at the end of the row reads "No child ever refused admission." Stepney Causeway was the coordinating centre for Barnardo's many branches including their four Canadian homes. It housed classrooms and workshops, a photography studio, dining rooms, dormitories and offices. This home was the mustering point at which boys from workhouse institutions and Barnardo's branches throughout Britain were outfitted for emigration.
