Several of the child emigration agencies considered establishing Canadian agricultural training facilities on grant land in western Canada to smooth their wards' introduction to life in the Dominion. Only one of these institutions, the Barnardo Farm at Russell, Manitoba enjoyed any measure of success. It closed in 1908. The training homes were more expensive to operate than distributing homes and the strong Canadian demand for even untrained youngsters called the additional expense into question.
