Boys worked hardest from April to September during seeding, haying and harvest. The farm household rose before dawn and worked until late evening in the peak season. Apprentices fetched the dairy herds for milking and worked about the barn during their first months in Canada. Older immigrants took pride in learning to handle horses and to manage ploughs and other field machinery. In winter, home boys worked with their masters in neighbourhood woodlots, drawing timber out of the bush by sleigh. In this photograph, the younger boy still wears knickers while the older is in overalls and has a watch and chain.
