Both girls and boys remained in the Canadian distributing homes only a few days before being sent off to their rural situations. Girls would not receive wages for their service as domestics until they reached age fourteen, but youngsters over age ten worked in return for their board, clothing and schooling. Children under eleven were boarded with families at the expense of the homes. The girls in the foreground of the photograph were probably going to situations rather than to boarding places.
