Note the young age of these immigrants. Early emigration served two functions. It freed a place in the British institution for another child and established the immigrant in his new environment while he was young enough to learn new ways more rapidly. Unfortunately, very young children were often too small to be of much use to their Canadian employers and many were frequently returned to the home during their first year in Canada.
