This tin trunk was used by an immigrant British girl from Dr. Barnardo's Girls' Village Home. It contains clothes and accessories she would need to begin a new life in Canada. A label on the inside of the lid encourages the girl:
As soon as you begin to earn wages, will you not make this resolution?: --
I have now been given by these Homes a good chance to make the best of my life.... I am therefore resolved to put by a stated amount of my wages each quarter to be sent to Miss Kennedy, Hazelbrae, Peterborough, Ontario, so that she may thereby help other girls in the Mother Country as I myself have been helped. If earning 2 dollars a month, I will give 25 cents per quarter to the Homes.... This is the least I can do, and I do it gladly, and gratefully.
