Dr. Barnardo bids farewell to a group of young men being sent to learn farming at Russell in the Dauphin-Riding Mountain district of Manitoba. Parties of juvenile emigrants travelled third class in special sections of the steerage compartments which shipping companies set aside for them. Parts of the decks were roped off as play areas for the younger children. Home officials conducted religious services on board and children often sang hymns for the other passengers. By 1905 the transatlantic voyage took no more than a few days.
