This page from the records of Annie Macpherson's first Canadian home, Marchmont, at Belleville, Ontario illustrates the transformation of an 1892 immigrant to Moira, Ontario. On the right, upon admission to the Manchester and Salford Refuges we seen him at age nine; on the left, in his Sunday clothes, we see him after five years in Canada. These before and after photographs show the transformation which gave child savers confidence to continue and expand their work despite Canadian opposition during the eighties and nineties. This boy had lived independently on the streets of Manchester before being admitted to the Refuge. Nevertheless, he came to Canada still young enough to be able to adapt readily to new circumstances. He had only two situations in Canada and his employers thought him a fine worker. He was accidentally drowned shortly after the photograph at left was taken.
