Not only Quebec's suffragists but those elsewhere across the Dominion attacked a legal system which discriminated between husband and wife in terms of obligations and rights. The idea of being forced to live with a man who in some way had proved himself objectionable was akin to slavery. Once women had the vote it was believed that such inequities would be swiftly eliminated.
