A well-ordered home, and particularly an efficient kitchen, were cherished as an ideal by women of many classes. The expensive and idealized gadgetry shown in this photo was only obtainable by the wealthier classes. However, whether poor or rich, the great majority of girls were encouraged by their schools, churches, and families to accept a domestic orientation as normal and preferable for their sex.
