This group photo was taken at Nellie McClung's home in 1916 in Edmonton, Alberta, during Emmeline Pankhurst's visit to Canada. Canadian suffragists were informed about activities elsewhere by such lecturers who regularly toured the Dominion. Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the British suffragette Women's Social and Political Union, had visited Canada prior to the war. On those occasions, Canadian feminists had been impressed by her dedication and sacrifice, although critical of her resort to violence as a means of obtaining suffrage. On her 1916 visit, however, the welcome was unrestrained as Pankhurst was now, like many other suffragists, a fervent champion of the war effort.
