In response to the Boer War, the lODE was established in Canada in 1900. The first chapters were founded in Fredericton and Montreal, but the center of the movement soon shifted to Toronto. One of the nation's largest women's clubs, it attracted many of Canada's more conservative patriots. These women banded together in an effort to promote an organization among women and children that would encourage the study of the history of the Empire. During the Boer and Great Wars, these women raised money for the cause, formed branches of the Red Cross and sent "comforts" to the men overseas. In times of peace they raised war memorials to Canada's glorious dead, encouraged youth movements such as Guiding and Scouting and assisted the Victorian Order of Nurses. Though their greatest attention was focussed on the promotion of Canadian Imperialism, they too became interested in the condition of women.
