Extension, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, August, 1913.
In September, 1912, coal miners struck for higher wages and union recognition. The mine owners throughout the island held firm and brought in strikebreakers. On a night in August, 1913, striking miners attacked mine facilities and strikebreakers' quarters at Extension. Houses, the mine entrance, and a mine train (shown here) were burned.
