The Mounties met with stiffer resistance on each charge. Bricks, stones, and bottles were thrown at them as they waded into the mob. On the second charge south, one rider's horse fell and he was assaulted by several rioters. The plight of this man and the crowd's stiff and unyielding opposition resulted in an order that the Mounties use weapons. One man was shot dead where he stood, and scores of others were wounded. Panic swept the crowd, and the stampede for side streets and alleys began.
