By Saturday, June 21 the mayor had issued three bans against public demonstrations. The strike was running out of steam after five weeks, and the streetcars had reappeared. Pro-strike veterans announced a parade on Main Street, in defiance of the Mayor, to begin at 2:00 pm. Saturday. By early afternoon an unruly mob had gathered in front of City Hall, and several people attempted to stop a streetcar. Eventually someone knocked a trolley off the wire, stopping a south-bound car, and several hundred people tried to tip it on its side. When they failed, a man ran inside, slashed the seats, and set the interior ablaze.
