Note the lack of adequate lighting and the absence of safety equipment. Pulleys hanging from the ceiling mangled or killed many workers. The men worked in filth all year and had only thin wood walls to keep out the cold in winter. These conditions combined with low pay and unsympathetic employers created fertile ground for the growth of trade unions.
