Women were also much concerned about the effect of alcohol on children, and women in the movement frequently argued that prohibition was necessary to protect them from alcohol as they grew into adulthood. Such a concern for children was intensified by the many restrictions on the life of a middle class woman of the time. Unable to participate in polit- ical or business life, and narrowly restricted to the home, children might well be her only outlet, the only objects that gave meaning to her life. Prohibition stories and poems featuring children were very popular among all prohibitionists, but especially among women. One of the major activities of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union was the Band of Hope, a temperance society for children.
